something has been bothering me for the past couple of days. i'm on the bus headed towards home from nyu, and we stop at a red light. to my left are a group of young black boys, probably ages 14-16. donning basketball shorts and white t's, a couple with basketballs in their hand, its apparent they just finished playing a game of bball at the park. but my eyes venture to their feet. why? i dont know, but i notice something freaky. they all have the same kind of sneaker on. sure their in varying colors, but their all the same. it left me a little uneasy, and i realized that it was a small example into a big problem, well at least to me, occuring among us young people today. this desire to conform.
kanye west puts on a pair of "shutter" styled sunglasses in one video, and in a matter of days its on the face of all these different people. rihanna gets a haircut and on the first day of my senior year in high school, i saw about 10 different girls with that same cut.
conformists don't seem to understand this cardinal rule: you will never be able to duplicate or "rock" a particular style like those who originally "created" it. i used quotation marks on "create" because not all people who set a style trend are the originators of it. those people who set the trend chose to do something different, something unique. they chose to step out of their box and experiment. if us young people continue to copy the things that we see, then where will our creativity go?
straight to the left.
